Scientists publishing in the journal Nature Geoscience (http://www.nature.com/ngeo/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/ngeo1930.html ) report they have discovered that when icy comets collide into a planet, amino acids can be produced. These amino acids, essential building blocks of life, are also produced if a rocky meteorite crashes into a planet with an icy surface.
The earth was formed about 4.5 billion years ago and underwent heavy bombardment by comets and meteorites from the time of its formation until 3.8 billion years ago. By 3.5 billion years ago life had emerged.
Many believe we are close to figuring out how microscopic life emerged in the ocean “naturally” in a short time—a few 100 million years.
The Genesis account relates that microscopic life emerged in the oceans at the beginning of Day 5. This time corresponds to 3.5 billion years ago, coinciding with the oldest fossils discovered. Furthermore, in Genesis first life is described as a formation not a creation. Whereas a creation is something created from nothing that cannot be explained scientifically, like the human soul; a formation is something made from something else in a process that is within the laws of nature—thus explainable scientifically.
Therefore, we should not be surprised when a “natural” process is discovered for the appearance of life, as Genesis says that life did emerge within nature.
There are only three creations in Genesis which will not be explainable by science—these (in addition to the formation of first life which is still not fully explained) remain unexplainable by science today.
