Daniel Friedmann (Trade Paperback) 219 pages, illustrated

If religion did not involve itself in so many absolutely idiotic debates one wonders what it would do with its day. Pope Pius XII in 1951 may have endorsed the theory of the Big Bang as completely compatible with the Roman Catholic view of creation, however that was a moment of relatively modern enlightenment the number of which can be counted on one finger. Evolution or no evolution, the curious inconsistency of those who would ban abortion yet endorse violent jihad and the death penalty, the secondary status of women; well one could go on forever with this so let’s not.

Daniel Friedmann chooses to leap into one of the contentious debates by attempting to reconcile the view of the Bible’s Book of Genesis (Earth created in six days) with that of modern science (Earth created over 13.7 billion years). To his credit, Friedmann mans up to his task and emerges with a rational, sensible theory which therefore will be rejected by fundamentalists on either side. More’s the pity.

It really is unfair to boil an author’s 200 plus page book into a sentence, but that\s reviewing for you. Essentially, Friedmann’s argument is that God keeps time his own way. 13.7 billion years to God is six days to you or me. Further, The Genesis One Code argues that the Bible does get the order of things correctly – going from stars first and ending with Adam and Eve, people, plopped into Eden where they immediately start mucking everything up.

It is quite an interesting read and Friedmann deserves congratulations for taking on a subject and institutions where the victory he can hope to achieve is at best Pyrrhic. All the more reason to give The Genesis One Code respect.

The polarized conflict between scientific theories of evolution and the Bible and Torah accounts of creation reach a boiling point in The Broken Gift. Hold onto your hats for a roller coaster ride through thousands of years of detailed evidence that attempts to resolve some of life’s oldest mysteries. The journey will leave you breathless if not inspired.

For millennium, we have seen through a glass darkly, as murky images of a big bang igniting the universe, stories of Adam and Eve, and hypotheses of apes evolving into humans cascade over our consciousness in a confusing cataract. We sometimes wish the arguments could be finally reconciled.

Enter Daniel Friedmann, the CEO of a large aerospace corporation. In The Broken Gift, he wades more deeply into the discussion about evolution vs. creation than ever before. Ancient questions that have baffled humanity stew into an intriguingly fragrant broth in his new book. Not to be content with his investigations into these matters in his groundbreaking The Genesis One Code or his published peer-reviewed scientific papers on space industry topics and cosmology, the author attempts to reconcile the Bible and Torah account of creation with scientific observation—a task that may be unparalleled —and he succeeds on a new level that will startle readers who terminate their understanding with the facts of scientific data and amaze those who believe that God designed the cosmos according to His perfect master plan.

The author explains this separation of concepts: “The division is partly underscored by an inability to reconcile the stories on a common timeline; the scientific account via the fossil record as opposed to the Genesis account. The most controversial element pertains to the nature of humans; special creations versus smart animals. Many have abandoned the early six-epoch view of Genesis (now known as old earth creationism) and moved toward an interpretation of a literal six days (now known as young earth creationism), with humans as very recent divine creations. Scientists, on the other hand, maintain a strict view of evolution as having occurred during the course of billions of years, in particular with humans evolving over millions of years, with no room for God.”

Both cannot be right. Or can they? Will future events prove that this division was completely unnecessary?

One day, Daniel Friedmann may be renowned as the history detective that succeeded in pulling together centuries of polarity into a unified understanding. His obvious passion for this subject manifests in the details of every page of his 242-page book. The Broken Gift merges information gleaned from manuscripts as old as 800 years and cutting edge scientific data to demonstrate an alignment between the dates of key events pertaining to the development of the universe and the appearance of humans on Earth.

So, how did we get here?

The author unravels this primordial puzzle in twelve chapters that explore with equal fairness the scientific rationalization and the scriptural explanations. Then, he performs a most intriguing clarification: according to his detailed calculations, the two accounts can be fused. He reveals that their differences may have been mirrors of each other all along.

Readers will be delighted with other aspects of this book in addition to the above mentioned topics. Have you ever wondered just exactly where we are in the Age of Man? Are we near the so-called End Times? Was Eden a myth, another dimension somewhere between corruptibility and incorruptibility, or a real place on the map? Did sin cause mankind’s downfall? Can we comprehend God’s creative process?

The Broken Gift should win awards for excellence. Readers will discover an absorbing attempt to brush away the sands of time and reveal a new view of eternal truths, such as the need for humanity, facts and fiction surrounding The Flood, Babel, Wave-Partical Duality, and Time. Readers will fairly float through the book with ease, for despite the lofty subject matter, he writes engagingly with excellent grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and spelling and composes his book in an easy-to-read format that can be absorbed by anyone. Best of all, readers need never wonder how he arrived at any idea. Footnotes abound that document every resource the author used to springboard to his inspirations. Three Annexes, a Glossary, and an Index make return reading a snap, and readers will want to return because the book will be widely discussed.

Daniel Friedmann’s second book, The Broken Gift, expands upon a key chapter in his first book, The Genesis One Code, a chapter that tantalizingly introduces “Book Two” with an all too brief section on origins of humanity. The first book brilliantly presents a reconciliation of the timing of the formation of the universe, and the emergence and development of life on earth. In his second book, The Broken Gift continues with a logical presentation on the appearance and early history of humanity involving key events in man’s history – dispersal and language. The book contains practical arguments, with supporting reference material that spans recognized ancient and modern authoritative documents (all online or easily accessed!). The title intrigued me – what gift? Why was it broken? How did the title fit in with the topic? Delving into the book, the answers soon become clear. God’s “master plan” for reconciliation with His creation is moving towards conclusion – with science and creation in perfect harmony.

I stumbled on his book, quite by accident, during my pursuit of texts related to the Vedas and Kabbalah. Anyway, surprised as I was, I read his work and scribbled all over it during my Christmas vacation in Egypt wandering under the stars and architecture of ancient times.

I have no quibbles about the mapping from Biblical to Earth time. Those sufficiently concerned will fine tune the transposition algorithms over time. Thanks in advance!

However, I was left with a far greater fascination with the personages of seers like Moses.

What is the make of such men who are so attuned with the motions of the universe to capture such deep insights? Today, we tease out truths with the scientific method (is it random? can we reproduce it? can we manipulate it?). Moses’ truths came from a different place … from that GOD thing.

I look forward to reading about what Dan, or anyone else, has to say about Moses’ access into such fundamental truths.

Overall: Worth reading and pondering over. Thanks.

Last week I was at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History looking at trilobite fossils, at the same time a paper entitled “Discovery of some 400 million year-old sensory structures in the compound eyes of trilobites” was being published.

Trilobites are a well-known fossil group of extinct marine invertebrate animals having an external skeleton, a segmented body, and jointed appendages. They appeared during the Cambrian era, at a time when most animal phyla appeared.

Their eyes are well preserved and have long been studied – now scientists have been able to go further. What can we conclude?

The trilobite eye is the earliest known eye existing in the fossil record, yet it is extremely well designed. It is not a primitive eye in any way, but a highly advanced and highly effective eye, especially given the trilobites’ typical environment at the bottom of deep water that is normally close to being completely dark. Even though trilobites were the most prevalent animal in the Cambrian sea, no significant evidence of trilobite eye evolution exists in spite of an abundant fossil record dating back to the early Cambrian era.

The Genesis One Code correlates the creation of animals as related in Genesis precisely with the Cambrian era, 530 million year ago. Not only does the Bible help explain the sudden appearance of almost every animal phyla in a very short time but also the fact that, as we see in this example, they were complex right from the beginning.

Archaeologists have discovered many extinct species that physically resemble us. They are known as Hominins: a member of the human lineage, more closely related to living people than to chimpanzees or other living primates.

The last Hominin to go extinct was the Neanderthal. They arose about 250,000 years ago (vs. humans who appeared 200,000 years ago) and went extinct about 30,000 years ago. Were these hominins human?

According to the Bible, no! The sources clearly tell us that we have unique features, most of all the ability to use language and symbolic thought, usually expressed in the sources as “understanding”.

He [God] created him [Adam] with four attributes of the higher beings [angels] and four attributes of the lower beings [animals]. [The four attributes of] the higher beings are: …; he speaks, like the ministering angels; he understands, like the ministering angels; … He [Adam] has four attributes of the lower beings: he eats and drinks, like an animal; procreates, like an animal; excretes, like an animal; and dies, like an animal…..[i]

What does science say about us vs. Neanderthals or for that matter all prior hominins? While still under dispute, the answer is coming out in agreement with the Bible. Here is the latest from the New Scientist magazine:[ii]

The single greatest difference between Neanderthals and humans that we can see in the archaeological record, however, lies in both the quantity and nature of the artifacts they imbued with an obvious symbolic dimension.

Humans today live in what we call a symbolic culture. All the objects around us have a symbolic dimension. The clothes we wear, for instance, send out signals about us that are unrelated to their practical function. We form symbolic relationships where no biological relationship exists, with a husband, sister-in-law, godchild, blood-brother, for example. Language, of course, is another key example, the relationship between the words and the objects and concepts to which they refer is completely arbitrary and that is the essence of a symbol. Neanderthal’s created few symbolic artifacts… but these artifacts pale next to the record of symbolic material culture created by early humans.

This subject is explored in further detail within the book, The Broken Gift: How did we get here?.

A space rock streaked across the sky and exploded over central Russia on February 15 2013, raining fireballs over a vast area and causing a shock wave that smashed windows, damaged buildings and injured people. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/15/us-russia-meteorite-idUSBRE91E05Z20130215

The earth is covered by a thick atmosphere. Anything trying to enter the earth experiences friction from the atmosphere which heats it up and totally or partially destroys it. In particular, space rocks—up to several meters in size—will burn up when trying to strike the earth. In fact estimates show that every year thousands of space rocks burn up before hitting earth. Thus the earth has a fantastic protective shield for most situations. However, some small pieces do make it to earth—usually falling over isolated areas or the ocean. The Russian rock caused significant damage as it partially burnt during entry. Full asteroids, too large to burn up, have hit the earth in the past; in particular one asteroid hit was likely responsible for the last mass extinction on earth which spelled the end of the dinosaurs and paved the way for humans to come into existence.

Chapter 9 of The Genesis One Code discusses mass extinctions and asteroid impacts. It shows that the five mass extinctions that have occurred in the earth’s history are alluded to in the scriptures with their time of occurrence.
